Ariane Heloise Hughes
Ariane Heloise Hughes is a London based painter and a graduate from Camberwell College of Arts (2019). Her work is an amalgamation of contemporary and traditional imagery that she has fused together to challenge dualistic subject/object ways of thinking. Ariane uses western Art and Philosophy as examples to demonstrate how prevalent this dualistic way of thinking has become as she highlights the way in which language is structured; subjects acting on objects. She believes, that it is due to this structuring, that humans have the tendency to compartmentalise things, such as the self/other, subject/object, oversimplifying the world in an attempt to fully comprehend the nature of our existence. This ambiguity of existence is reflected throughout her work. No entire body remains intact, perspectives are warped and scales exaggerated as Ariane plays between the mundane and the surreal.
